○What kind of place
Hachikita Highlands is located to the north of Mt. Hachibuse (elevation: 1,221 meters). The view from the summit is superb with Mt. Hyonosen to the south and Mt. Daisen to the far west can be seen.
A variety of alpine plants bloom in the highlands, and a natural monument of Hyogo Prefecture, the skunk cabbage community, and other valuable marsh plants can be found.
In the highlands where nature changes from spring to autumn, an abundant nature allows visitors to enjoy outdoor activities such as bird watching, leisurely walking in the woods, paragliding, camping, auto-camping, and hiking.
In particular, Hachikita Highlands Ski Resort has opened for the winter season. The quality of its snow is the best in the Kansai Region. The long 4-kilometer ski route from the summit and a variety of ski slopes, and the route used for the World Mogul Championship attract skiers and snowboarders.
○Terrain
At the elevation of 830 meters of the upper east slope of Hachikita Highlands, there is Onuma Marshland, an approximately 2-hectare (20,000m²) high moor that was developed in the sunken area behind the place created by a landslide. Its size and contents make it one of the greatest marshlands in Hyogo Prefecture.
In particular, Japanese elms are the main trees in this marshland. Japanese elms are found only in Hyogo and Shiga Prefectures in the Kinki Region and rarely grow in clusters. One of the largest Japanese elm trees in Hyogo Prefecture stands in this marshland and is designated as a local monument of Hyogo Prefecture.
Also, many Japanese horse chestnuts, zelkova, maple, Mongolian oak, beech, and dogwood trees can be seen, and cedar trees have been planted in the southern part of the marshland.
There are also many endangered species of plants and animals that are in need of protection. Some species in the Red Data Book belong to Onuma Marshland, and there are 12 species in total including cinnamon fern, Nippon maple, northern bugleweed, Epipactis thunbergii (A. Gray), Habenaria sagittifera and furbish lousewort.
The marshland, though, has been changing year by year, and pampas grass and Japanese rowan trees have grown to be large. It shows aridification in the marshland has been in progress.
Wooden walkways are laid in the marshland for visitors to enjoy watching wild grasses and flowers such as cinnamon fern and wetland plants such as round-leaved sundew can be seen, which create a place where Japanese fireflies can inhabit. In mid-May, around the white birch trees near Onuma Pond, a group of grape hyacinths spread out like a lavender field.
