Uwano Highland

What kind of place

 Uwano Highlands is a highlands with an elevation of 540–650 meters that spreads out in Torokawataira, a natural scenic spot that was selected as the first of 100 tourist places in Hyogo Prefecture.
 The highlands was also selected as one of the 100 landscapes of Japan. Vermilion Japanese azaleas in spring, a crispy breeze going through green scenery in summer, autumn leaves and tree nuts in the woods in autumn, and over 2-meter height of snow making a silvery white world in winter. This is a place showing vivid nature from season to season.

Terrain

 Uwano Highlands used to have many beech and Mongolian oak trees.
 A gigantic Japanese judas tree retains its figure from olden days and still has spring water emerging from its roots.
 The woods were changed into grassland to keep Tajima cows. Black locust trees were planted for cows, and they grew large. Cedar and cypress trees were planted to support the villagers’ life; however, the value of wood changed so that they have not been maintained well. As a result, the number of abandoned mountains increased.
 Nowadays, broadleaf forests have been re-evaluated, as their fallen leaves and acorns attract many creatures. Therefore, birch trees were planted and the multi-storied forest method where different age group of trees are planted has been applied. The time has come where mankind should change the mountains to regain their original figures without stripping them of their trees.

Nature activities

 There is an adjacent outdoor education center in Uwano Highland, a Nordic Walk with a diet effect, 23 types of free field athletics, a pizza making experience made using a full-fledged stone pot. Can be enjoyed together with nature.
 In addition, the camp facilities are enriched, there are 41 permanent tents for 3 to 5 people, 19 sites for auto camps, and there are 22 rooms for 4 to 8 people with bunk beds at accommodations, 3 meals per night It is cheap with 3,510 yen.

Museum for Wood Culture

 The adjacent sightseeing spot is the Museum of Wood ”Kinodendo”, a museum on the theme of forest, sea and sun.
 This museum is one of Japan's largest cedar integrated structures designed by architect Tadao Ando, and displays models of private houses and carpentry tools from around the world.
 You can enjoy making wood and bird call in the museum experience. (The experience must be reserved one week in advance.)

Botanical garden and natural water

 The Tajima Highlands Botanic Gardens is located in a vast 17-hectare (17,000 m²) area, and you can see more than 2,000 types of plants growing naturally there.
 A gigantic Japanese judas tree stands in a dense primeval forest. The tree is 1,000 years old, 38 meters in height and 16 meters in trunk circumference. It emits its unique atmosphere as you get closer, and attracts visitors with its powerful and majestic figure.
 Despite the fact that it is located in the elevation of 680 meters, aseptic spring water of 5,000 tons pours out from its roots. (The water was selected as one of the 100 exquisite waters of Japan in the Heisei Era (1989–2019), and the third in Japan for its beautiful water and landscape. You can drink or take water with you for free.)
